HTC Moves Into New Home
After more than a year of waiting, the Houston Technology Center (HTC) has a new home. On May 17, 2002, the HTC staff completed move-in and is operational in the 26,000 square-foot building, located in Midtown at 410 Pierce.
HTC Orientation meetings are now being held at the new building on the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month, and HTC anticipates that other events, such as the Technology Champions Meetings and Mentor Breakfasts, will be held in the building later this summer.
The build-out of the incubator space, approximately 12,000 square feet on the second and third floors, is anticipated to begin in June, with an estimated completion date of August. Once complete, the incubator space will be able to accommodate as many as 15 – 17 HTC client companies.
HTC client companies that lease space in the building will enjoy state-of-the-art telecommunications and information technology systems, as well as an environment where collaboration amongst fellow entrepreneurs and HTC staff is encouraged. All HTC client companies will enjoy enhanced services such as “HTC University” and “Office Hours.” HTC will design an entrepreneurial education program and invite Premium-level Service Providers to present topics of interest to HTC’s client companies in a brown bag luncheon format. Premium Service Providers will also be invited to conduct “Office Hours” in HTC’s facility, in which HTC clients can drop by for informal counseling during the Provider’s specified hours.
Beginning July 16, 2002, the HTC’s workforce development/technology training courses will commence in the Information Technology training lab. 6,000 square feet of the Houston Technology Center is dedicated to providing the city’s diverse communities with IT training, including a 200-seat auditorium and the IT training lab, which includes 50 computer workstations.
The extensive remodeling of the Houston Technology Center was made possible by a $1.1 million grant from the Economic Development Administration (EDA) with matching funds of $750,000 from the Midtown Redevelopment Authority and the City of Houston’s Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ) No. 2. HTC will lease the building from the Midtown Redevelopment Authority for a period of 20 years.
